In the Gospel of Mark Chapter 5, Jesus seeks a man possessed by a demonic force that calls itself “Legion” and then with all authority casts it out of the man and into a herd of pigs that rush off of a cliff and drown in the sea... An incredible story, Christ’s absolute authority over the spiritual realm was proclaimed. There are a few things I would like you consider as you read this account.

First, as we acknowledge the existence of God and the authenticity of the Bible we must also concede that Satan and his minions of fallen angels do indeed exist.  James 2:19, “You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that- and shudder.” This is a matter of fact as a believer. Not folklore or legend, there indeed in this broken world is an earthly king seeking to destroy all of man.  Make no mistake, he has but one goal, and that is to see mankind cursed and destroyed.

Second, as sure as the devil does exist and seeks you harm, we have access to a redeemer who has authority over the entire universe.  Jesus is in complete control and has the power to protect and defeat evil.  His greatest gift to us from the Father is a sword to swing away as we wage war on this temptation riddled world... But the sword looks like a book.  It’s your Bible, painting a clear picture of all the darkness called sin that portrays pleasure.  The presence of Jesus through the word exposes his snares.  2 Corinthians 2:11, “In order that Satan might not outwit us, for we are not ignorant of his designs.”

Lastly, trust that Jesus is faithful.  This whole mess got started because we believed a lie, that God didn’t have our best interest in mind... I’m sure you recall the snake’s name that offered the temptation. The inheritance of death still lingers until Jesus intervenes, and He gives us the faith we need to persevere.  As C.S. Lewis wrote in The Screwtape Letters, “ Do not be deceived, wormwood, our cause is never more in danger than when a human, no longer desiring, but still intending to do our enemy’s (God) will, looks round upon a universe from which every trace of Him seems to have vanished, and asks why he has been forsaken, and still obeys.”  Jesus is faithful and vastly more powerful than any demonic force Hollywood could ever dream up and glamorize. Take heart, we serve a living King!
