The Gospel’s Worth

What is the most valuable treasure you possess in this world?  Recently I was watching a TV show where a family in the midst of the night experienced a house fire. The father ushered his children and wife through the top of the roof out of the burning house and eventually unto the lawn in safety. In a striking turn of events he went back into the burning house and minutes later emerged from the front door with a family photo album and some other treasures. The main character of this show was willing to risk his life and health for his families most prized treasures. He later in the show dies of a massive heart attack whose root cause was all the smoke he took in while searching for his families greatest treasures in the burning house. This man risked it all for the treasures of his heart. The true Christian will do no less for the Lord Jesus because the true Christian’s heart has been remade by the Spirit to see the true worth of Jesus and His Gospel. The true Christian’s heart sees the reality that Jesus and His Gospel is the only thing truly worth living for and dying for. Jesus, Savior of Sinners, is worth it all.

Jesus in Matthew 13:44 gives a profound parable displaying the kingdom of God’s worth. He stated, “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” [1] Jesus puts forth in this parable the worth of God’s kingdom that has come through Him. He is the King of this Kingdom and His Worth, His Gospel’s worth, is seen by the man selling all that He owns to acquire the land where the treasure that is worth infinitely more than all He owns is buried. Notice Jesus said the man selling it all to get the land did so “in his joy”. The man with immense joy forsook all he had in the world. This was not a duty, but a delight. This was a purchase not made begrudgingly. No one twisted this man’s arm into doing this. He saw the beauty and worth of the treasure and gladly sold all he had to gain it. The true Christian, who has been born again, will see the worth of Jesus and His Gospel in such a way. For them Christ and His commands are not burdensome, rather a delight. For them Jesus is truly an immeasurable treasure that warrants a forsaking of worldly pursuits in favor of following Jesus.

Is Jesus your greatest treasure?  Would you risk it all for more of Him? Only a yes makes you a disciple of Christ.
