The Problem is Us

What in the world is wrong with this place? Have you ever wondered that as you beheld the crime and unrest in the short, the problem is us. However, to fully expand on that we must understand first who are Creator is.

God is Holy, Holy, Holy.

In Isaiah 6, the prophet Isaiah is taken up the throne room of God where His manifest presence is. God’s glory is brightly on display as Isaiah sees God lifted high and exalted. The angels are praising God saying in Isaiah 6:3, “And one called out to another and said, “Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of hosts, The whole earth is full of His glory.”[1] Notice the angels are saying, “Holy, Holy, Holy.” Holy meaning other. The angels are singing the truth and reality of God that He is all together in a different category than all beings in the Cosmos. God is the only being who is all powerful, eternal, all knowing, omnipresent, perfect in all His attributes. He transcends time and space. His majestic and perfectly pure.  He is perfectly righteous and justice. It is God’s otherness that brings Isaiah to the point of being totally undone. Isaiah falls on his face and says “woe to me, I’m a man with unclean lips and I live amongst a people who are unclean.” God responds by atoning for the source of Isaiah’s sin claim through the altar of sacrifice. The first and foremost thing we must understand about how a good God interacts in a fallen world is to see that God’s goodness and otherness is simply awesome. God is truly wondrous to behold. God is holy and good. He is not the problem. He is the ruler of the universe and His good and pure and righteous.

The Problem is Us

Have you ever bought into the illusion that you are a good person? Have you ever noticed people who say “I’m a good person” can only make that claim in comparison to others around them or in the society to which they belong?  God’s Word calls us to not compare ourselves amongst ourselves to determine our goodness, but to compare ourselves to God’s standard of righteousness. When we do that the word “good” is the last description we can attach to ourselves if we are being honest examiners.   You and I are wicked.

The reason there are abortions, sexual immorality, war, pestilence, famine, disease, heartache, hurt, and sin is the result, ultimately, of our existence in this world. Romans 5:12 states, “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned.”[2] Adam, the first man sinned and we inherited his sinful nature.  So it's natural for us to do things that are contrary to our good and to the glory of God.  It comes naturally to us.  It's easy for us.  Per the Scripture we sin because we are sinners. We are not sinners because we sin, we do what is naturally in our heart.   Romans 3:23 makes it clear this is the condition of all of us in humankind, not just some of us, but all of us. Romans 3:23 states, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”[3] Your sin may manifest itself differently than others. However, make no mistake you and I naturally are rebels against our Creator. Though some of our sins may be private and hidden, before God, it's ever present.  God is holy and we are wicked.  We all covet, lust, hate, have jealousy, are envious, manipulative, and lie, just to name a few.  If you want to know what God thinks about mankind apart from his Holy Spirit and grace than Genesis 6:5 is the place to go. Genesis 6:5 states, “Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”[4]  This is a diagnosis of mankind.  The Lord saw the wickedness of man was great in the earth and every intent, not some, every intent of the thoughts of his heart was evil continuously.  Is that good diagnosis? No, but it is an accurate one.  God looks on mankind and says, ‘They are a mess.’  The reason death, the reason disease, reason famine, the reason sexual immorality exists, is because we are wicked.  We are wicked. We are problem.

The Solution to the Glory of God is Jesus

The solution to problem of evil and God’s just dealing with it all while sustaining the existence of humanity is Jesus.  Galatians 4:4-5 states, “But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.”[5] When the fullness of time came, in the perfect time, when the fullness of time came God sent forth his son born of the woman, born of the law, so that he might redeem those who under the law, that we might receive the adoptions of sons, that's what, what this is saying is history centers on Jesus, in the fullness of time Christ came for God's solution to solving the problem of evil, for God's solution before eternity passed, for dealing with evil and its consequences in sin and its consequences with his son Jesus Christ.  When Jesus came in the perfect moment of time he lived the life that you could never live and I could never live.  The only person who obeyed the Law perfectly and completely.  Every ordinance, every law Jesus obeyed perfectly before God in every moment with every attitude had, every word said, and every did done. Jesus was perfect, sinless, holy in His 33 years on earth.  He lived a life before God that you and I were called to live and never could.  His obedience to God in all its perfections culminated to His willing death on a cross whereby He endured the judgment of God for the sins of God’s people. His resurrection on the third day was validation of His identity as God incarnate and the Sinless Savior who alone brings the forgiveness of sin through His death on the cross.   Jesus perfect work on the cross was the climax of history.  Everything in history points to it or points back to it.   Jesus is the solution for evil.  You see in Christ God reconciles all who will repent and believe all the while God upheld His perfect justice.  God maintained his justice, he punished sin.  He punished our (the church) sin upon Jesus. Those who reject Jesus God will punish them for their sin with everlasting wrath and judgment in hell itself. History points towards Jesus.

The glory of Jesus is the climax of history, yet is it the climax of your personal history?  He is the only solution to the evil of the world and the evil of every human soul. Jesus saves His people and by His Spirit changes us from the inside out as we await the day of our perfection in His presence forever procured by His cross.

Till we see that God is Holy, we are the problem and Jesus is the solution we will wander aimlessly in the darkness void of truth and the light of God’s grace. May God open eyes to His holiness, our helplessness, and Jesus' glory.
